Our clients ask

What is Home Energy Audit Definition?

An energy audit is a systematic assessment of a building or facility’s energy use, identifying opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce consumption, and lower energy costs. Evaluating equipment and conducting on-site inspections to pinpoint areas for improvement and recommend actionable measures. Testing air leakage for building envelop penetration for improving the insulation R- value in building envelop.

What is the blower door test for air leakage testing?

The blower door test is a diagnostic procedure used to measure the airtightness of a building. It involves installing a fan in an exterior door frame to create a pressure difference between the inside and outside. This helps identify air leaks by showing where outside air is entering or conditioned air is escaping. The results assist homeowners and builders in understanding energy efficiency and improving comfort by sealing leaks.

What to have prepared before an energy auditor arrives?

Access: Ensure all areas of the building, including attics and basements, furnace room, backyard, are accessible for inspection.

List of Concerns: Write down any specific issues or areas of concern regarding energy use or comfort.

Documents required: Prepare Tax property bill and gas bill and a valid ID (drive license or photo ID, etc.)

What to expect from an auditor’s check out?
  • The auditor will conduct a thorough inspection of the home. They will perform tests, including a blower door test to check for air leaks and infrared thermography to identify weaknesses in insulation, ductwork, windows, and doors.

  • Allow 1- 2 hrs for the auditor to finish his evaluation (time to conclusion varies depending upon the dimension and also difficulty of the home).

  • A combustion analysis may also be done to test for any CO2 leakage from gas lines in central heating systems, hot water heaters, or appliances.

How much time does an energy audit take?

An energy audit can take anywhere about 1 to 2 hours, depending on the size and characteristics of the home. Your Registered Energy Advisor will measure both the interior and exterior of the house and take photos of specific areas, including the furnace, air conditioning, attic insulation, and windows. This is solely for report preparation. They will enter this information into a software program, which then produces the EnerGuide rating report and generates a label.
